Opening Doors to the Harvard Experience

Congratulations on your admission, and welcome to Harvard College. We are eager to help you and your family understand our financial aid programs and to assist you in finding ways to meet your college costs.

The Financial Aid Office is typically open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Eastern Time. For the month of April, we also have extended phone hours from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm Monday through Thursday in order to answer all of your questions.

If you have questions about your Harvard University Pin, visit http://www.pin.harvard.edu/. For questions about ID please visit http://vpf-web.harvard.edu/ofs/huid/.

To finalize your award - Over the summer:

If you have received a financial aid decision with your April admissions notification:

  • Read through the material which accompanied your financial aid award letter.
  • Feel free to call us at 617-495-1581 with any questions or concerns.
  • Discuss with your parents your aid offers from Harvard and other colleges to which you have been admitted. You may find the "Compare Your Aid Award" tool at the College Board website helpful.
  • Visit the Harvard campus if you can, particularly for our Admitted Student Visiting Program, April 25-April 27. This is the best way to meet your future classmates, and to participate in a weekend program that is designed to expose you to a range of academic and extracurricular samplings of the Harvard experience. If you cannot visit in person, take a virtual tour of the campus.
  • Visit My.Harvard to explore the Harvard community online. You can view your financial aid information under the "Campus Resoures" tab.

If you applied for financial aid and did not receive an award letter in your packet:

Your aid application is probably incomplete at this time. You should have received a letter explaining the additional information that we need to obtain before evaluating your application. You may check out the status of your aid application under the "Campus Resources" section of My.Harvard.

If your application became complete very recently, it is possible that we were not able to evaluate the materials in time to send you an award letter, but we will do so as soon as possible.

If there is new information that affects your family's ability to meet the expected parent or student contributions, or if you think we may have overlooked some aspect of your family's financial circumstances in arriving at the family contribution:

Please do not hesitate to contact the Financial Aid Office at 617-495-1581 to request a reconsideration of your financial aid award. While you are welcome to send or fax us copies of more attractive financial aid offers that you may have received from other institutions, those better packages alone are typically not a reason for us to change the family contribution.

Please note that the deadline for notifying us of your decision about enrolling at Harvard is May 1, and extensions are very rarely granted. If you need to request an extension for financial aid reasons, please contact the Financial Aid Office.

To finalize your award - Over the summer:

  • Check the Student Employment Office web site at www.seo.harvard.edu for potential academic year job opportunities.
  • If your financial aid award includes a Federal Pell Grant, or if you have received a Student Aid Report (SAR) which indicates that you are eligible for a Pell Grant, you should verify that the information on the SAR is correct.
  • Complete the Financial Aid Activities and Demographics Supplement. (Note: You will receive an email when this form is available.)
  • Inform the Financial Aid Office of any additional outside awards you'll be receiving. You will be contacted at the beginning of June with instructions for the process.

Why are there no merit scholarships? Harvard is firmly committed to allocating resources to sustain our policies of need-blind admissions and need-based financial aid. Our unusually talented student population - chosen in a very competitive admissions process - would, in any case, complicate the equitable distribution of merit-based awards. However, students last year brought with them to Harvard about $13 million in scholarships from outside sources, thus enhancing their own financial flexibility during their college years. Learn more.
